The African Union (AU) has announced the schedule for the highly anticipated 2025 African Union Commission (AUC) elections, which will take place in February. The elections will determine the leadership of the AUC, including the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and Commissioners, who will be responsible for steering the AU’s policies and programs across the continent.
According to the AU, the elections will be conducted in a two-stage process:
Commissioners’ Election (February 12-13, 2025) – The Executive Council, made up of foreign ministers from AU member states, will elect and appoint the Commissioners.
Chairperson & Deputy Chairperson Election (February 15-16, 2025) – The Assembly of Heads of State and Government will elect and appoint the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson.
Election Process
The election follows a strict voting procedure where a two-thirds majority is required for a candidate to be declared the winner. The voting process unfolds as follows:
All candidates start on the first ballot.
If no candidate secures the required two-thirds majority, voting continues to a second and third ballot.
If the third ballot is inconclusive, the contest is narrowed to the two leading candidates, and the one with the lowest votes is eliminated.
If there are only two candidates from the start and neither secures a two-thirds majority after the third round, the candidate with fewer votes is withdrawn, and the remaining candidate proceeds to another round.
If the remaining candidate still fails to secure the required majority, the election is suspended by the AU Chairperson.
If there is only one candidate initially, but they fail to obtain the two-thirds majority after three ballots, the election is also suspended.
The African Union Commission plays a crucial role in shaping policies, implementing decisions, and coordinating activities across member states.
The leadership transition in 2025 will be closely watched, as it will influence the AU’s stance on key issues such as economic integration, peace and security, and Africa’s global positioning.
With the elections just weeks away, intense lobbying and diplomatic engagements are expected among AU member states to rally support for candidates seeking top positions.
