African youth losing patience with slow pace of change – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has warned that Africa’s young population is growing increasingly impatient with the continent’s slow pace of progress in governance, justice, and development.

Speaking at the African Union High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Governance, and Human Rights in Accra, President Mahama, who also serves as the AU Champion on Reparative Justice, urged leaders to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive action that meets the demands of the continent’s youth.

“Our young people comprise the majority of our population and are growing increasingly impatient. They are not asking for charity; they demand fairness, they demand opportunity, and a stake in our continent’s future,” Mahama stated.

He stressed that the dialogue must not become “another ceremonial event filled with lofty speeches, but void of action,” warning that citizens, especially the youth, are watching and waiting.

Mahama added that civil society is mobilised, the diaspora is engaged, and Africa’s institutions are growing bolder and more prepared to deliver results.

“We must rise to the occasion, not with rhetoric, but with clear action,” he emphasised.

The AU dialogue, currently underway in Accra, brings together leaders and stakeholders to discuss strategies for enhancing democracy and human rights across the continent.
