Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has criticised the the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s handling of the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo power facility, describing the incident as “highly preventable” and raising concerns over what he sees as contradictions in the official response.
Speaking on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, May 2, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker argued that the destruction caused by the fire should not simply be dismissed without clear accountability.
“The assets that got burnt at Akosombo, I believe, were highly preventable,” Mr Darko stated.
He questioned the rationale behind government’s decision to launch investigations into the incident after President John Mahama had already publicly described the fire as “an act of God.”
“The President of the Republic has already come out with his reasons for the fire. He says it’s an act of God. So what else are they going to investigate?” he asked.
According to Mr Darko, the situation reflects broader concerns about leadership and accountability within the energy sector, particularly at a time when Ghanaians continue to experience recurring power outages.
He maintained that citizens expect practical solutions and preventive action rather than explanations after avoidable crises occur.
The Suame MP further linked the Akosombo incident to wider frustrations over the country’s power challenges, stressing that households and businesses are bearing the brunt of disruptions despite ongoing energy levies.
While commending engineers for their efforts in restoring supply after recent outages, Mr Darko insisted that political leaders must take responsibility for failures within the sector.
