Ghana and The Bahamas  deepens labour mobility through Teacher–Nurse recruitment deal

Ghana has strengthened its international partnerships with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of The Bahamas, marking a new milestone in labour mobility and skills exchange between the two nations.

The agreement, announced by Ghana’s Minister of Special Initiative, Hon. Emmanuel Agyekum, will see the recruitment of experienced Ghanaian teachers and nurses to serve in The Bahamas as part of the initial phase of a broader bilateral cooperation framework.

Hon. Agyekum, who led the Ghanaian delegation alongside Mr. Nelson Ndebah Ndebugre from the Office of the President, also held a high-level meeting with The Bahamas’ Prime Minister, Hon. Philip Edward “Brave” Davis, to reaffirm both countries’ commitment to strengthening ties through people-centred and mutually beneficial development.

According to the Minister, the partnership reflects the international community’s growing confidence in Ghanaian expertise, discipline, and professionalism, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors. He described the initiative as a “win-win” for both countries, opening new pathways for Ghanaian professionals to gain global exposure, share knowledge, and improve livelihoods while supporting The Bahamas’ development goals.

“This initiative will allow our teachers and nurses to serve not only as educators and health professionals but also as ambassadors of Ghana’s values, discipline, and excellence,” Hon. Agyekum stated.

Beyond teacher and nurse recruitment, the MoU provides a framework for future cooperation in other key areas such as commerce, culture, tourism, and human capital exchange, reflecting both nations’ shared vision of inclusive growth and global partnership.

The Minister assured stakeholders that the welfare, rights, and safety of Ghanaian professionals deployed under the programme will remain a top priority. The Ministry, he said, will ensure that every recruitment process is transparent and fair, in collaboration with relevant agencies in Ghana and The Bahamas.

While the specific terms of the MoU remain confidential under diplomatic protocol, Hon. Agyekum emphasised that the spirit of the agreement is rooted in respect, cooperation, and shared prosperity.

He expressed gratitude to the Government and people of The Bahamas for their continued partnership and called on Ghanaian youth to see such initiatives as opportunities to demonstrate their skills and values on the global stage.

“This partnership marks the dawn of a prosperous future,” he said. “Let us continue to strive towards a world where Ghanaian talent is recognised and rewarded; not just as a source of national pride but as a force for global progress.”
