Kuami Eugene opens up about pressure to keep releasing hit songs

Ghanaian Highlife and Afrobeat musician, Eugene Kwame Marfo, popularly known as Kuami Eugene, has opened up about the pressure he faces to consistently release hit songs, saying the expectations placed on him by fans have become “disheartening”.

Speaking on TV3’s 3Entertainment, he award-winning singer said many people still expect him to maintain the same “Kuami Eugene Rockstar pattern” that made him famous after his breakthrough in 2017.

According to the “Monica” hitmaker, his career has been built on delivering back-to-back chart-topping songs and high-profile collaborations, which has created constant demands from fans for more music. He explained that while he appreciates the love from supporters, he now feels the need to evolve as an individual and an artiste.

“I think my brand has been very loud for a very long time,” he said, adding that growth has made him realise the importance of stepping back occasionally to “breathe”, relax and focus on what he genuinely loves doing.
The musician noted that despite releasing several popular songs, including Monica, Do Better and Belinda, within a short period, fans still continuously ask when his next song will arrive.

He admitted that the situation can be emotionally draining, especially after putting significant effort into creating successful music projects.

Kuami Eugene also spoke about wanting greater artistic freedom and long-term respect in the music industry, similar to veteran Ghanaian musicians such as Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy and Samini.

He said he admires the peace experienced by established artistes who can take breaks from releasing music without facing pressure from fans.

“One thing I want for myself in this industry is to be recognised one day,” he said, explaining that he hopes to reach a stage where audiences will respect his legacy even if he stays away from releasing songs for some time.

The singer revealed that 2027 will mark his 10th year in the music industry, but because he consistently releases hit songs, many people still see him as part of the newer generation of artistes.

Kuami Eugene mentioned younger musicians such as Kojo Blak and Olivetheboy, noting that although fans may associate him with the new crop of stars, he has been active in the industry for much longer.

He further disclosed that he currently has about 14 unreleased songs, but wishes to eventually enjoy the same level of patience and appreciation that veteran acts receive from fans.

During the discussion, panellists on the show acknowledged the pressure many artistes face to constantly maintain a particular image or musical style. They also praised Kwame Eugene for embracing personal growth and authenticity in his recent projects.

Kwame Eugene explained that his latest project reflects his true personality and differs from the energetic “party anthem” style many listeners associate with his brand. Despite the pressure, the musician said he remains grateful for the support from fans, even as he hopes they will eventually allow him more space to evolve creatively.
