Education Ministry calls urgent meeting with GAUA, GTEC to end strike

Ghana’s Ministry of Education has invited the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting on Monday, 12 October 2026, to resolve the ongoing strike by university administrators.

The meeting is aimed at facilitating constructive dialogue between the parties towards an amicable resolution of the industrial dispute, which has disrupted administrative operations at public universities.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, 11 October, the Ministry said the government remained committed to addressing the concerns of organised labour through established negotiation mechanisms and constructive engagement.

It urged all parties to approach the meeting in good faith and with a strong sense of responsibility, considering the impact of the strike on students, university communities and the broader national interest.

The Ministry called on GAUA’s leadership to use the meeting as an opportunity for meaningful engagement and work with the relevant stakeholders to resolve the impasse.

It expressed hope that the discussions would produce a positive outcome and facilitate a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities across affected tertiary institutions.

The meeting comes as the strike continues to disrupt university operations and affect preparations for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The University of Ghana has postponed its reopening, initially scheduled for Monday, 12 October, while the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has also postponed its reopening, originally scheduled for Tuesday, 13 October.

Both universities are yet to announce revised reopening dates.

The ongoing industrial action by GAUA has raised concerns about disruptions to administrative services and the start of the new academic year at public universities.

The dispute has also put pressure on efforts to ensure the timely resumption of academic and administrative activities across affected institutions.

The outcome of Monday’s meeting could determine the next steps towards resolving the dispute and restoring normal operations.
