University of Ghana postpones 2026/2027 reopening amid GAUA strike

The University of Ghana has postponed the reopening of the 2026/2027 academic year amid the ongoing strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

The university, in a notice dated 10 October 2026, said the reopening, initially scheduled for Monday, 12 October, had been postponed.

Management said a revised reopening date would be announced in due course but did not specify when academic activities would resume.

The announcement follows a similar decision by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which postponed its reopening indefinitely due to the impact of the GAUA strike on its operations and administration.

Despite the postponement, the University of Ghana has urged students to complete their academic registration online in accordance with procedures outlined in an earlier communication.

Management said completing the registration process would enable students to secure their places for classes and remain eligible to participate in the upcoming random bed allocation exercise.

The university did not provide a new date for reopening or specify when the bed allocation exercise would take place.

The postponement follows an ongoing nationwide strike by GAUA over concerns relating to salary disparities, outstanding allowances and conditions of service for university administrators.

The association has called for improvements in its members’ remuneration and the resolution of outstanding grievances through negotiations with the relevant authorities.

The industrial action has disrupted administrative operations at public universities, raising concerns about its implications for the academic calendar and the delivery of essential services to students.
