CAGD pays promotion arrears to 56,003 GES teachers ahead of deadline

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), completing the payments ahead of a deadline agreed with teacher unions.

In a press release dated Thursday, 15 October 2026, CAGD said 49,725 teachers received their payments alongside their October salaries, covering salary adjustments and arrears effective from 1 January 2026.

A further 6,278 teachers received their payments in September 2026, bringing the total number of teachers paid to 56,003.

The payments were completed ahead of the 16 October deadline agreed between government representatives and teacher unions during a meeting at the Ministry of Education on 2 October 2026.

Despite the payments, thousands of promoted teachers are still awaiting the processing of their records and the resolution of verification issues.

According to CAGD, approximately 80,000 teachers were reported to have been promoted. However, the Ghana Education Service had processed and submitted supporting documents for only 56,633 of them.

Of these, CAGD verified and paid 56,003 teachers, while 630 cases remain pending due to issues identified during the department’s verification process.

CAGD said it was awaiting the resolution of these issues by GES before the outstanding payments could be made.

The remaining 23,367 teachers are yet to have their cases processed and the relevant supporting documents submitted by GES.

The department said it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met the necessary payroll requirements.

It added that it remained committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the required corrections had been made or complete and accurate documentation had been received and verified.

CAGD also expressed appreciation to the Ghana Education Service, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.

The development follows the agreement between government representatives and teacher unions to address outstanding promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears for affected GES staff.

For teachers still awaiting payment, the processing of outstanding records and the resolution of verification issues will be crucial to ensuring that their arrears are paid.
