Ghana’s three main teacher unions have issued an urgent notice warning that teachers could take unrestrained action if the government fails to resolve outstanding salary and promotion issues by mid-day on Thursday, 24 September 2026.
In a joint statement dated Tuesday, 22 September 2026, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Progressive Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) accused the government of failing to fulfil its agreement on promotion salaries and arrears.
According to the notice, the 2025 promotion placement and the accompanying payment of arrears have not been fully implemented, despite an agreement with government to automatically place all affected teachers by the close of September 2026.
The unions described the situation as “disturbing and disappointing,” saying it has fuelled further tension and anger among rank-and-file teachers nationwide. They cited disregard for resolving other outstanding issues, including the renewal of the Collective Agreement and payment of the Deprived Area Allowance, among others.
The joint notice warns that if the issues remain unaddressed by mid-day on Thursday, 24 September 2026, the unions “will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore,” adding that duty bearers should take full responsibility for whatever happens. The statement stresses: “This is not a threat but a promise.”
All teachers have been called on to remain calm and follow official directives from their union leadership, and to participate in any actions announced by that leadership.
