The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the reported sexual abuse of a female student by the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, calling for a swift and impartial investigation into the allegation.
In a press statement dated Friday, October 16, 2026, NUGS described the allegation as deeply troubling, stressing that school authorities have a responsibility to protect students rather than expose them to harm.
The student union urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the relevant investigative authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that the affected student receives the necessary protection and support.
NUGS demands protection for affected student
NUGS called for the student’s identity and dignity to be protected throughout the investigation, warning against any form of intimidation or victimisation.
It also stressed the need for counselling and other necessary support to help the student cope with the situation.
The union said the reported incident highlighted a wider concern about sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse of authority affecting female students in senior high schools and tertiary institutions.
” No student should have to endure such experiences simply because they want to pursue an education,” the statement said.
NUGS emphasised that educational institutions must provide safe environments where students can pursue their studies without fear of sexual harassment or abuse by individuals entrusted with their care.
NUGS calls for prosecution if allegations are proven
The union called for the headmaster to be prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law if investigations establish that the allegation is true.
It maintained that no individual should be exempt from accountability because of their position or office.
NUGS further argued that where criminal conduct is established, administrative sanctions alone should not replace prosecution as required by law.
The union’s position comes amid broader concerns about the safety of students and the need for effective mechanisms to address allegations of sexual misconduct within educational institutions.
Student union urges stronger reporting systems
Beyond the specific allegation, NUGS urged the GES and tertiary institutions to strengthen systems for reporting sexual abuse and ensure students can report incidents without fear of retaliation.
It called for reports of sexual misconduct to be treated seriously and addressed promptly, emphasising the importance of accountability and safeguarding students.
The union also expressed solidarity with the affected student and others who have experienced sexual harassment or abuse but may have remained silent because of fear.
NUGS reiterated that schools and universities must be places where students feel safe, respected and protected.
The statement was signed by NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim Esq.
The union has called for the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, protect the affected student and pursue appropriate legal action if the allegation is substantiated.
